Tips For Tackling An Out-Of-State Move

If you're planning an out-of-state move, the logistics can leave you feeling overwhelmed. After all, out-of-state moves are complex, because you have to do everything from a distance. While this type of move can be a significant undertaking, there are some things that you can do to simplify the process and ease your stress. Here are a few tips to help you along the way.

Build a Comprehensive Plan

Planning is essential to a low-stress move. When you're dealing with a long-distance move, that's where you should start. Build your plan in three stages so that you can focus on each one independently.

  1. Packing - The packing stage of the plan should address what items you're looking to move. Create a list room-by-room that includes the furniture, clothing and other items that you'll be taking. While you're at it, create lists for things you're going to donate and anything you want to dispose of, put in storage or sell. By preparing with lists like these now, you'll have a better idea of how much you need to pack. This simplifies your preparations by making it easier to determine how many boxes you'll need and what other types of supplies will be necessary.
  2. Transition - The transition stage is often the most complex. You'll want to create a solid plan that includes how you're going to get from your current home to the new one, what route you'll take, what stops you'll need to plan and any special considerations there might be. For example, if everyone will be in the moving truck, you'll probably want to plan on renting a tow dolly to tow your car. If you're taking a car and a moving truck, plan routes and stops that make it easy on everyone.
  3. Settling In - Plan out the new house in as much detail as possible. You might even be able to print out a floor plan of the house to start recording where everything needs to go. That way, you can easily unload things into the rooms where they belong once you arrive at the new place. And, by marking up a floor plan, you'll even get a better idea of what things you might not be able to fit, if any.

Create a Solid Budget

Moving out of state, no matter how far, is going to be more expensive than relocating across town or into a neighboring county. You'll want to make sure that you have a solid budget in place that you can stick to, that way you'll have better control over your finances throughout the process. Some things to account for include closing costs for a purchase or the security deposit for your rental as well as any deposits or fees for utilities. You may have to budget for extra utilities if you're moving into an area where you'll have to pay for water or trash pickup.

In addition, you'll need to budget for your packing supplies, the moving truck, the movers (if you're hiring any), fuel for the move and cash for expenses along the way. Plan for extra cash to stock up the refrigerator, then you can settle in with confidence. Another thing to remember, though, when you're moving out of state is to budget for your car insurance, registration and titling and driver's license changes. All of these things are going to be important considerations.

These two tips are important to consider early in your moving process. The better prepared you are, the easier the whole process will be for you. Talk with a local moving company to see if you can get a moving package that simplifies your plans.
